The First Annual Manding Ancestral Capoeira Angola and African Arts Festival ended the night of Sunday 26 November with a live concert by festival sponsor Cissa Paz. She played at Pampa Churrascaria in Lavington. As we said goodbye to new and old friends the memory most people took with them was from the closing workshop and roda where over fifty new capoeiristas aged 10-15 were given a chance to learn from Mestre João Grande.
To all of you who attended, offered us discounts, in-kind sponsorship, purchased gear,contributed to the Indiegogo, or provided a sounding board and advice we could not have done it without you.
Mandinga Ancestral 2017: Capoeira Angola and African Arts Festival brought living legend of Capoeira Angola, Mestre João Grande, to Kenya. The festival represents the important homecoming of an African-based art that took form in Brazil. The inaugural Mandinga Ancestral took place in Nairobi, Naivasha, and Nakuru (Rift Valley). In addition to numerous Capoeira Angola workshops, the festival included:
- A safari through Nakuru National Park;
- Samba and Axé dance workshops;
- Swahili dinners;
- Evening bonfires at the lodge;
- Daily yoga practice;
- Free workshops for local youth;
- Guided tour of Kuona Trust;
- Live performances by Cissa Paz whose melodic blending of Luso-disaora sounds were accompanied by a Kenyan percussionist;
- Visit to Masai Market in Nairobi; and
- A dance party at one of Nairobi’s most popular venues.
Internationality – The Globalcreating Community served as the facilitator and co-organizer for this event.
